Grade: B
Review: The beginning of the movie was slow-paced, nothing exciting really happened. It is a real boy-ish kid movie, and we're not sure how true it was to the book. (Readers out there, send us a comment on what you think!) The basic idea was that there were creatures co-existing with the human race. A boy stumbles upon a book which reveals secrets of the creatures. He becomes able to see the creatures around him and a mystery of the author forms around him and his sister, along with a his twin and a friendly creature that helps them along the way. Some creatures are evil, while some are kind. I feel the movie did not spark our interest, but it would be an interesting fanstasy-fiction movie for younger children.
Summary: A younger child's type of movie, fantasy-fiction, not great but not terrible, something to watch if you have nothing much to do.

The Golden Compass
Grade: C-
Review: First of all, only fractions of the movie showed what actually goes on in the book. (If you were interested in watching the movie, read the book instead! It is easier to understand and it explains things better.) The movie gives you a glimpse of what the book is, like an advertisement. The movie showed only a small part of what the book showed, about a girl, her dæmon, and the friends (and foes) she meets along the way. The movie was hard to understand, and it gives you the idea of Dust, which is the point over what the multiple sides argue over. The main heroine, Lyra, fights alongside with Iorek, her bear friend and guardian. Mysteries and secrets unravel as Lyra discovers important things along her journey to save herself and many others. If you watch the movie, and want to understand more, read the book. Important parts were left out, and not everything was explained to a point where the viewer can understand. We have both read the book, and while we were watching the movie, we were very disappointed.The ending was confusing, and was nothing like the book.
